Pirani Vacuum Gauge

Pirani is one of the most famous names in the development of pressure and vacuum. The German born (July 1 1880, Berlin) physicist is best known for his Pirani vacuum gauge which works on the principle of the measurement of heat loss.

Vacuum gauges are used in order to attain a correct measurement of the amount of pressure inside a vacuum. The Pirani model is made up of a metal wire which is open to the pressure being measured, the wire is heated by a current and is also cooled by the gas; when we measure the voltage and the current flowing through the wire, we can determine the gas pressure by the resistance. This is similar to the way Thermocouple gauges work, those measuring the actual temperature of the wire.

In 1802 the Russian scientist Vasily V Petrov discovered the means to develop the arc lamp used today in welding and in movie projectors as used in cinemas around the world. This means of conducting electricity in so many diverse applications has allowed industry to move on at a rapid pace, introducing what was previously unheard of to become everyday features in our life; fluorescent tubes, camera flash lamps and electric trains.

The efficiency of arc lamps is what makes them a popular choice, that and the fact that they rarely ever burn out. As lamps get older, usually after a period of use over 4 to 5 years the warm up time increases by anything from 2 to 4 minutes.

Mercury Arc Lamps are negative resistance devices and so requires a ballast to ensure that there is no risk of the lamp taking excessive current. We have a continually growing and changing catalogue of lamps (mercury, sodium, CFL etc) and ballasts so it is not possible to list everything in our stocks.
